Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month: Pride (15)

As part of our contribution to LGBTQ+ History Month this February, we’re hosting a full day of events celebrating queer history, creativity and activism. 

Set in the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a minibus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.

The day also includes a two-hour poetry workshop with writer Simon Maddrell; a screening of Iris On The Move: When Love Broke The Law – two short LGBTQ+ films from the Iris Prize Film Festival; a poetry reading and Q&A panel event with Simon, Lesbians & Gays Support the Miners’ legend Jonathan Blake and Iris Prize Director Berwyn Rowlands; followed by a break for food before the Pride screening.

Tickets for the poetry workshop are £5.

Tickets for the film screenings are £4.70 / £4.40 each.

The poetry reading and Q&A panel event is free.
